Two completely different kinds of product answer to the name, and picking the wrong kind is the actual mistake — not picking the wrong brand. ## Two categories, two purposes **Marketplaces** — Rover, Pawshake — are where owners go to find a walker. They bring you clients and take a commission on each booking. What they do not do is help you run the business: the scheduling, the records, the invoicing are still yours. **Business software** — Woodle, Time To Pet, Scout — assumes you already have clients, or can find them through referrals and local visibility. Its job is the work around the walking. Plenty of successful walkers use both: a marketplace to fill gaps in the diary, business software to run everything once a client is theirs. ## An honest look at the field ## What actually separates them Most of these tools can schedule a walk and produce an invoice. The differences that matter in daily use are narrower and less advertised. **Built for one person, or for a company?** This is the big one. Time To Pet and Scout are excellent at what they do, and what they do is coordinate multiple walkers — assignment, dispatch, staff permissions, who did which walk. If you are one person, most of that is weight you carry without using. It shows up as more screens between you and the thing you wanted to do. **Phone or desk?** You are outdoors, one-handed, often in rain. Software designed around a desktop dashboard and then shrunk to a phone feels it. Check whether the thing you do twenty times a day takes one tap or four. **Does it work without signal?** Woods, valleys, underground car parks. If the dog's vet number needs a connection to load, it is not there when it matters. **How does it price?** Per user, per client, per booking, or flat. Per-client pricing punishes exactly the growth you are working for. ## How to choose without wasting a month Pick the three things you lose the most time to. For most solo walkers those are: rebuilding the month's invoices, finding a key safe code, and answering "how was she today?" Then trial two tools against those three things only, for a fortnight, with real clients. Not the feature list — the three things. Most people who switch tools do it because of the first one. The monthly reconstruction is the job nobody signed up for, and it is the one that quietly decides whether the business feels sustainable. ## The honest answer about Woodle We make one of these, so treat this section accordingly.
